Lake Shore Gold, a subsidiary of Pan American Silver, is located in Timmins, Ontario. The Bell Creek Complex, located approximately 20 kilometers northeast of Timmins, Ontario, consists of an underground mine and processing facility.

The milling facility is a conventional free milling gold circuit consisting of crushing, SAG milling, leaching, CIL and CIP, stripping and refining.  The mill currently processes up to 232 tonnes per hour from two separate mines and disposes of its tailings via conventional end of pipe discharge.

About the Opportunity

We are looking to hire a Chief Assayer to join our Bell Creek Mill in Timmins, ON., on a full-time basis.  The schedule for this position is Monday-Friday, 8 hrs/day.

Please note that this role requires relocation to the Timmins area and is not a camp-based position.

In this role, you will be accountable for the efficient operation of the analytical laboratory in order to provide daily, precise and timely analytical information on all types of samples from the entire mining and milling operations.  This position will supervise the testing of all mine, mill and environmental samples including sample preparation, fire assay, wet lab, and other related analysis.

Reporting to the Mill Manager, the Chief Assayer will have the following responsibilities:

 

  • Supervise and participate in activities of the assay laboratory to ensure the provision of timely and accurate test results.
  • Establish precise analytical systems in accordance with industrial laboratory standards and implement new or enhanced analytical methods when possible
  • Monitor the analytical results and accuracy of the procedures being carried out
  • Constant monitoring of work quantity, and directing the necessary and primary work loads
  • Maintenance on all assay lab equipment- ensure equipment is in good working order
  • Control all costs related to the assay lab
  • Develop supervisory/leadership skills of assay lab employees
  • Ensure all employees work in a safe manner
  • Introduce industrial standard methods in relation to our current needs, using the necessary chemicals and instrumentation required for these methods and keep current methods updated
  • All analytical methods are to include standard reference materials, random check samples and blanks to be analyzed along with the daily work
  • Perform yearly and probationary employee performance appraisal reviews
  • Conduct safety talks and staff meetings
  • Be involved in the accident / incident investigation program
  • Correct or commend health and safety performance

More About You

The following will be critical to successfully performing this role:

  • University degree or College diploma in Applied Chemistry or related field
  • A minimum 7-9 years of laboratory/assay experience in gold milling operations in a leadership role
  • Thorough knowledge of and experience in atomic adsorption and fire assaying methods 
  • Ability to do preventative maintenance on the lab equipment
  • Proven leadership and interpersonal skills
  • Computer skills, including Microsoft Office software
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Effective decision-making skills
